Panasonic TC 42PX14 – 42″ VIERA plasma panel – widescreen – 720p – HDTV Review

I got this TV for myself in December 2009. It has been about six months now, so I thought a review might help someone else who is looking at this or similar TVs. I got it from my local Costco and paid 0.00, which was and still is pretty good for a 42″ HDTV.

The picture quality is absolutely awesome. I have an older, 2002, 1080i Toshiba 65″ projection in the house which has provided some excellent viewing over the years. I was somewhat reluctant to buy a 720p because I was concerned about detecting the difference in 1080 and 720. Let me just say that it is now almost painful to try to watch the 65″ TV as compared to the Panasonic upstairs. I have a Blue-ray player hooked up to each and the difference in picture quality is noticeable, which I attribute to the differences in technology (projection v. plasma).

I was also concerned with glare on the plasma since the room it is in has two windows. The TV is in the corner with a window about 3 feet to the left of the TV and another window on the opposite wall pointing right at the TV. We don’t watch a lot of TV during the day, but when I have watched something I have been really surprised that I cannot really catch a glare from either window at all.

This model doesn’t have a lot of extra’s to it. Only two HDMI ports, it has VIERA and not VIERA CAST so there is no internet connectivity, the SD card slot reads VERY slowly (which suggested that trying to connect to some of the various internet capabilities that other models and brands offer would probably be equally as slow). If you have a Blue-ray hooked up to it that has some internet connectivity options or a computer that can actually surf the net, which I have both, then all you really need is the TV to look at.

Only bad thing is the remote has taken some getting used to, but that is mostly because I am still used to the previous TVs remote I think.

Hope this helps.

Once I got Direct TV to set everything up properly , the TV is great.

I just bought one TC-P42X1 and i love it But….. – Carlos Eduardo Jimenez – El Salvador, Central America
This plasma TV is Great!!!! The only drawback I could find, is that only brings one audio output (only DIGITAL AUDIO OUT PCM / Dolby Digital) and does not bring the computer RGB output for your old laptop, so if you have speakers or audio equipment with RCA inputs or else, you will have to buy a new one. After that the TV is very good according to the price

Check the specs at Panasonic.com – N. W. Hubbard – Shampoo-Banana, IL
As a shopper in the market for an HDTV, I noticed that the specs on this TC42PX14 are listed incorrectly with 6ave on Amazon. I trust this is an oversight on their part, but the specs listed here should be compared against the ones at [...]. The TC42PX14 has a 15,000:1 contrast ratio (not 30,000:1), and it only has 2 HDMI ports (not 3).

Panasonic VIERA U1 Series TC-P46U1 46-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review

The arrival (just a few days after ordering it online) was exciting! Delivery men carried the big box into the house, opened it, took the big set (46 inch screen) out and plugged it in to check if it worked. It DID! They left, and I got busy reading the big manual that described the installation and hook-up. My wife and I could lift the big set, and I followed the diagrams in the book, attaching our other Panasonic gear, the disc player and tape players, and home theatre speakers. We turned it on, and it worked! We’ve never seen such a terrific picture, sound and picture control! We have MANY classic tapes and discs, collected over the years, and we watch opera, and classical music presentations often. The Panasonic Viera 46 inch set is a marvelous addition to our home!

very pleased – James Kadel –
I did plenty of research before I finally decided on this TV, and I was not dissapointed. Not only did I find it about 0-0 cheaper on Amazon.com, but it was shipped to me rather quickly with no problem. For the TV itself, the HD quality is top-notch. The 600hz plasma screen is the best you can get for picture quality. It was easy to set up in about 15 minutes. The only negative thing I have to say is that the ‘glare’ minimizer feature as advertised doesn’t really make that big of a difference, that I can tell. But I would highly recommend this TV for it’s size, price, and quality it’s a fantastic deal.

My Plasma Turned Into A Cheap LCD – Justin – New York
I bought the 46U1 to be my very first big screen HDTV. I didn’t want to spend too much money but I didn’t want a cheap TV either. I found the 46U1 for sale at Walmart for 8 and grabbed one.

From the first moment I turned it on I was blown away! Beautiful picture, vibrant colors, and a feature very important to me. Deep blacks.

Approximately one month after enjoying my new HDTV every day something changed. I first noticed the change when watching a movie with a nighttime scene. It showed a man walking on a street at night under a streetlight. I had seen this particular scene a few weeks earlier while browsing the channels. What changed was that the black level on my U1, or the deepest black a TV can produce, was now dark gray and not black at all. I didn’t pay much attention until a friend mentioned the same thing to me a few days later while watching a movie. I popped in The Dark Knight blu-ray and low and behold my blacks were gray. The change was not subtle in the least and was very obvious to not only an AV enthusiast like myself but to everyone. I searched and found the thread over at [...] and the original poster mentioned his G10 suffered from the same black level increase. Since I found the thread, many G10 and even some V10 owners have come forward claiming their sets are faulty. Unfortunately for those of us who bought these televisions with our hard earned money Panasonic is denying the issue exists at all. They state that the increase is normal over the course of the plasma life. While true the change happens normally over the life of the TV the changes some of us are seeing are happening over the course of 1-3 months. Far sooner than normal for sure.

Enough about that though, on to the rest on the 46U1! Image quality, despite having grayish blacks, looks very good. Nice rich, and decently accurate colors. SD material looks fine but HD content looks exceptional, especially blu-rays played through my PS3. The integrated speakers are actually quite good and have a bit oomph as well. Menu options are very limited as you would expect on a lower priced model but there are enough settings to adjust the picture and sound to your liking. The set looks great sitting on my AV cabinet. A nice deep black bezel, although a bit thick for my liking, still manages to look sleek. A small silver strip accents the set toward the bottom. The stand is very sturdy but it does not swivel. One thing to watch out for are scratches. Make sure you clean the frame and screen with microfiber cloths and not cotton or paper products as the surfaces can be easily scratched if you are not careful!

Overall I am very happy with my purchase with just the one caveat. A good entry level plasma that could have been great if not for a fault in the design of the TV and every other 2009 Panasonic plasma. Everything from the cheapest to the most expensive ‘09 Panasonic plasma is affected. Will the new 2010 models still have the issue? Only time will tell but I would avoid buying one and instead look at Samsung or LG instead.

Not up to Panasonic Quality – W. Elliott – OKC
I agree with the previous 2 and 3 star reviews

The Panasonic DMC LX3 sits at the top end of the compact digital camera market. It has 10 megapixels and a 2.5x optical zoom lens. The lens has a wide angle setting equivalent to 24mm in 35mm format. This makes the lens wider than other compact digital cameras offer. Such a feature makes the Lumix LX3 a good choice for anyone who likes taking photographs of wide scenes such as landscapes. In my tests I was very impressed by the sharpness of the photos. Compared to other wide angle digital cameras the sharpness levels and overall quality of the photos produced was very good indeed.

With only 2.5x zoom on offer and taking into account the fact this camera has a wide angle lens its capacity for zooming in is limited. To work around this you have the option to decrease the number of megapixels you are shooting at in order to increase the amount of zoom available up to 4.5x.

When it comes to features the DMC LX3 should satisfy most hobby photographers. You can store photos in RAW mode to make future manipulation possible. You also have access to image stabilisation, a hotshoe, custom modes, a fast burst rate, manual focusing and manual exposure modes. Favourite settings can be stored in two custom modes for easy access.

A maximum aperture of F/2 gives you access to fast shutter speeds too.

On the back of the DMC LX3 you will find a 3 inch LCD screen. This is made up of 460,000 dots (twice as many as standard). This helps to make the screen very easy to view. There is also an option to buy an optical viewfinder. This appears to attach to the camera through the hotshoe.

The hotshoe is also used to attach an external flash unit. The internal flash pops up on the top of the camera. This helps to move the flash away from the lens and reduce the chances of red eye.

If you like to use your digital camera to shoot short movie clips then you will be pleased to know the DMC LX3 is capable of shooting HD quality movies.

I think Panasonic have done a good job with the layout of the camera. Although I will always prefer the layout and controls offered by larger Digital SLRs I found the switch to place the camera in macro mode or manual focusing mode useful. In addition there is also a switch to choose the aspect ratio for a shot. This makes it quick and easy to set up the camera to take a photo suitable for a 6 x 4 inch print or to playback on a widescreen television.

Another feature you may have noticed if you have seen the specification of the camera is the film mode. I’m not quite sure you can connect this directly to a type of film used in a traditional 35mm camera, but it does give you some control over the colour of your photos and the strength of the colours used.

Looking at the competition the DMC LX3 is up against cameras like the Canon Powershot G10 and the Nikon Coolpix P6000. To be honest at this end of the market you will generally find better picture quality, so often it is more of a case of deciding what features you like and how the camera handles. I was impressed though by the overall picture quality and the focusing and sharpness of my test pictures was a treat.

All in all the Panasonic DMC LX3 compares well with other similarly specified digital cameras. The wide lens makes it a good choice if you are interested in photographing sweeping landscapes.

Choosing the right HDTV is not an easy task, especially with many models to choose from. One way of narrowing down your choices, though, is by selecting a brand then comparing two of the best models of that brand, like the Panasonic TC-P50G10 and the Panasonic TC-P50S1.

Let’s start by comparing the design of the Panasonic TC-P50G10 and the Panasonic TC-P50S1. Both have impressive glossy black frames with fashionable hidden speakers a silver strip at the bottom. What sets them apart, though, is that the TC-P50S1 has more rounded edges while the TC-P50G10 has a fading silver tinge below the strip and a thinner frame. In fact, you will find few Plasma televisions with a thicker frame than the TC-P50G10. They both have glossy black stands that still don’t swivel, but the TC-P50G10 comes with one that’s round instead of the usual rectangular one.

When it comes to picture quality, the TC-P50G10 and the TC-P50S1 have the same basic strengths and weaknesses, namely the ability to create outstandingly deep black levels combined with excellent shadow detail and the lack in color accuracy, respectively. The TC-P50G10 has a THX mode, though, which gives it an edge over the TC-P50S1. In this mode, TC-P50G10 displays even better images, with better shadow detail and increased color accuracy, allowing it to better recreate the movie theatre experience.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the connectivity options. Both the TC-P50G10 and the TC-P50G10 do well in this aspect, offering three HDMI inputs and a SD card slot which allows you to share your digital photos via the Viera Image Viewer feature. The TC-P50G10 has more to offer, though, with a VGA input where you can plug in your computer, an analog audio output and an ethernet port to facilitate the Viera Cast feature.

The Panasonic TC-P50G10 and the Panasonic TC-P50S1 are also packed with many great features. Both HDTV models have the Viera Link, which, similar to the Bravia Sync of Sony HDTVs, allows you to turn all your compatible devices on and off with the push of a single button. These devices include your DVD recorder, Blu-Ray player, HD camcorder and even your surround sound speakers. Both models also come with a game mode and an anti-reflective filter, as well as features to prevent and treat screen burn-in, which is one of the most common problems with Plasma televisions.

One feature which sets the TC-P50G10 apart from the TC-P50S1 and previous HDTV models, though, is the Viera Cast mentioned earlier. This feature allows you to enjoy online content such as YouTube videos, Picasa web albums and Amazon Video on Demand, and other important information such as the latest stock market trends and weather reports, on a user-friendly web interface built into your HDTV. This means that you don’t need to have a computer to access all these. However, you will need an active internet connection and an ethernet line.

In terms of energy consumption, both HDTV models consume less energy than many Plasma televisions, particularly since they have a new type of Plasma panel called the NEO PDP panel. The TC-P50S1, in particular, qualifies for an Energy Star 3.0 rating with its relatively dim default picture setting. In spite of this, though, both models are still far from being as energy efficient as LCD televisions.

Other similarities include simple on-screen menus, though the Panasonic TC-P50G10 has two more color temperature presets, as well as the tag prices they come with. Indeed, the TC-P50G10 is only slightly more expensive, and with its excellent additions, it certainly comes out as the winner when choosing between the Panasonic TC-P50G10 and the Panasonic TC-P50S1.

The Panasonic TX-P46S10 is the latest offering from the same company that has whipped up a wide range of plasma TV’s for years now. This 46-incher is just one of Panasonic’s Viera, a line of HDTV’s. And so far boasts some of the most coveted features of digital entertainment today.

Enjoy Smooth and Clear Motion

This sleek product is perfect for watching your favourite sports and blockbuster flicks. It’s because the self-illuminating plasma panel boasts a high-moving picture resolution. All those action-packed scenes you like are perfectly displayed – without those annoying ghosting or after images.

Also, this technological marvel has the highest resolution available at 1920 x 1080 pixels, and a dynamic 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. With the Real Black Drive system working within the Panasonic TX-P46S10, correct dark and light balance is achieved. So you’re seeing the movie just the way the director envisioned it to be.

The system the Panasonic TX-P46S10 boasts prevents the black level response from dropping off significantly, even if you watch it somewhere from the side. It’s easy for this HDTV to overshadow its counterparts when it comes to displaying black without greying.

Ports for Interconnected Operation

With the use of an HDMI cable, this plasma gem is capable of being connected to a number of AV devices. Enhancing it with a surround sound system, headphones or DVD players and recorders is now made effortless. Anything that will complete your dream home entertainment theatre is just a cable plugging away.

There’s also a built in Lumix digital camera connection. This means that you can simply connect your latest Lumix into the Panasonic TX-P46S10 and share to everyone the stills or clips you have taken. You can also control the playback and other functions of the digital camera with the plasma TV’s remote control.

No mater what brand of digital camera you got, viewing the contents is not a problem. This is because this HDTV also comes with an SD card slot. Simply take out the SD card from your digital camera or camcorder, and insert it in the available slot. Your family and friends will surely enjoy viewing full-HD pictures and video clips.

A Multitude of Functions

The trend nowadays for plasma TV’s design is minimalism and astounding dimensions. However, this breakthrough appliance does all that without sacrificing performing various functions. It’s not surprising why it is one of the most demanded when it comes to HDTV’s.

The Panasonic TX-P46S10 has a standby timer, screen saver, automatic screen ratio fine-tuning, and child lock features. Also, when viewing photos from your SD card slot, you can make use of the built-in background music and display effects. The game mode guarantees satisfactory combat experience when a gaming console is connected to the TV. It also has energy saving mode and eco mode, letting you save on monthly bills and save planet earth.

The AR filter maintains that the images remain sharp, with very minimal glare. And because the Panasonic TX-P46S10 has a self-illuminating display panel, the colours remain crisp, vibrant and lifelike. So no matter where you sit in the room, you will experience full viewing pleasure.
